Swimming suitability is based on E. coli concentration and temperature. 

The standard for swimming in this report is E. coli bacteria concentrations less than 235 cfu/100 ml.  This standard developed over years of study, showed that only about 30 out of 1000 swimmers would experience illness when the E. coli were less than 235 cfu/100 ml. 
Up until 2019, Virginia’s water quality standard for freshwater beach advisories or closures was a single sample maximum of 235 E.coli CFU/100 ml. Virginia no longer has a single sample  maximum or any criteria for primary contact recreation in fresh water.

This site is not a health advisory. You use the Rivers at your own risk.  While 235 cfu/100 ml is a standard used by many jurisdictions, Virginia currently has no standard for freshwater primary contact recreation (swimming).  Virginia Department of Health suggestions for swimming safety are here. and here
